Thank you for being a friend!

I have a secret that I'm starting to publicly admit: I love "The Golden Girls."

It's the nostalgia of the 1980s that I love. I was a kid in those days.

I like the sisterhood. How all problems can be solved with a piece of cheesecake.

Some people say they like "The Golden Girls" but they're being ironic. I really like the show.

I like how they moved on with their lives after divorce or death of a spouse. They had second careers, volunteered in their community and had hobbies and interests. Sure, they had grandkids and all that, but other things drove them to wake up in the morning.

They were progressive for their time. Indeed, they were forward-thinking even today: Most people are not going to retire at age 65. Life goes on.

I was grossed out by their sex lives when I was a kid. Now, as an adult, my thoughts have matured: "Goddamn Viagra."

I think it's the popularity of Betty White (whose character was so stupid that I hated her) that helped me come out of the closet with my secret.

Finally at work I admitted to some people and the obvious question came up: Which "Golden Girl" do you identify with?

"Sophia," I said.

I lied.

I actually identified most with Dorothy.

She's practical. She's smart. She was a teacher.  Sometimes boring and always horribly dressed, she had a weak spot for her loser ex-husband, which I disagreed with. Otherwise, I liked her. She tried to do the right thing and usually did the right thing.

The series actually ends with Dorothy getting remarried, which in some ways was terribly wrong. Blanche should have gotten remarried. She was so desperate.

But Dorothy got married, and that's poetic justice. Or maybe randomness.

Other TV shows that I like:

* "Dog the Bounty Hunter" because I think Leland Chapman is hooooot. That's like my one and only white trash crush.

* "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" sometimes I like it but sometimes it's too orchestrated.

* "Ice Road Truckers" because I heart Canada and because the show is different than other stuff you see on TV.

* "Fashion Police" because I love Joan Rivers. I saw the documentary about her, "Piece of Work" and I love her more than before.

* "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit," the only crime show I like, I think this one is gritty and well-written. Although lately, I've been able to predict the endings, which always have a twist.

* Lots of others that I'm too tired to think of.
